About Fort William
This small Highland town situated at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest
mountain in the UK, is quite rightly the Outdoor Capital for walking and
climbing. No other area in the UK has such vast space with nothing but
big hills, majestic mountains, deep glens, beautiful rivers and streams,
plus as much fresh air as you can handle.
With a population of about 12,000, the town has a good range of amenities
and shopping. There is a mainline train link from London and flights into
Inverness, Glasgow and Edinburgh can get you here in 2-3 hours.
Historical Landscape
Located on the north-west fringe of Europe and Scotland, Lochaber consists
of 4,287 square kilometres of almost unbelievable beauty. Rugged in the extreme,
containing Scotland’s highest mountain and deepest loch the area is
part of what many Europeans term ‘the last European wilderness.’ Standing
on top of Ben Nevis on a clear day gives an awesomely inspiring vista, layer
after layer of rough, rocky pointed mountains interspersed by deep U shaped glaciated glens containing
misfit rivers and beautiful lochs.
Some of the oldest rocks in the world have been moved, manipulated and metamorphosed many times over in a journey through various climatic zones before being dramatically altered by glaciers and ice sheets during the last great ice age which ended here only about 10,000 years ago. This‘unspoiled’ natural, awesome, splendid, fearsomely raw landscape, attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year, keen to participate in its vast range of outdoor activities: to walk or climb the mountains, to swim in the pools of clear mountain burns, or to laze on glorious, empty, pristine beaches. Others travel through just to gaze in wonder then photograph the endlessly varying natural environment.
